Freealternatives.net: Discover Free Software Alternatives

Introduction

FreeAlternatives.net is a curated directory helping people find free alternatives to popular paid software. We cover productivity, creative tools, development environments, utilities and self-hosted software, focusing on options that come from a safe source and are genuinely usable without paying.

How we decide what to list

Every tool here passes the same test, whether we added it ourselves or someone suggested it.

The free version does the real job. Not a demo and not a trial. You can use it to do the actual work, for as long as you like, without a credit card.

Free means free for the long term. No expiring trials, no "free for seven days".

A paid tier is fine if it is optional. Plenty of good software sells a paid plan for extras like more storage, team features or removing ads. That is allowed here. What we exclude is a free plan so limited that the core job cannot be done without paying.

Our Features

Growing database of alternatives Over 160 tools and counting, across categories like:

  • Graphic design (for example GIMP in place of Photoshop)
  • Office suites (LibreOffice in place of Microsoft Office)
  • Note taking and knowledge bases (Obsidian, AppFlowy and others in place of Notion and Evernote)
  • Video and audio editing
  • Developer tools and utilities
  • Self-hosted software

Safe download sources Before listing a tool we check its official website and its download source. We are verifying where the software comes from. We are not auditing the software itself, and you can read exactly what that means in the FAQ below.

Free to be listed Being listed costs nothing, and suggesting a tool costs nothing. If we ever introduce paid options, we will explain exactly what they cover.

FAQ

How do I find alternatives to specific software?

Search by software name, for example "Photoshop" or "Notion", to see free alternatives with feature comparisons.

Can I suggest new alternatives?

Yes. Use the suggest form and we will take a look. Every submission is checked by hand before it goes live.

Do you verify software safety?

We verify the official download website for each alternative. We do not audit or guarantee the software itself and we cannot see inside it, so please use your own judgement before installing anything.

Why are some listed tools not completely free?

Because some tools offer a free version alongside an optional paid plan. We list them when the free version can do the core job without paying, and the listing tells you when a paid tier exists. Tools with no usable free tier are not included.

Are mobile apps included?

Our focus is desktop and web applications. Mobile alternatives may appear where they are cross-platform solutions.
